International Collaborations


The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) is a world-renowned multi-disciplinary research institute located in the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea, founded in 1966 through the support of the Korean and US governments. It was the first multi-disciplinary scientific research institute in Korea and has contributed significantly to the economic development of the country, particularly during the years of accelerated growth in the 1970s and 1980s. It has a research staff of over 1,800 research scientists, visiting scientists, fellows and trainees, and foreign scientists involved in basic research in various fields of science and technology.The mission of KIST was to assume a central role as the first comprehensive research agency for the promotion of the nation’s economic growth and the modernization of engineering fields. It has since developed into the foremost R&D organization and the foundation of technological development in Korea. By concentrating on urgently needed technological development during the early stages of Korea’s industrialization, KIST contributed to the modernization of industry and helped push ahead a period of rapid, remarkable economic growth for Korea. In addition, over the years KIST has produced a pool of premier S&T talent and spun-off numerous specialized research institutes. These accomplishments have guaranteed its continued role as Korea’s leading S&T institute. Prof Inyang explained during a benchmarking tour of Asian institutions of science and technology in May 2014 that  the experimental methods reviewed on site at that institution by the BIUST delegation are required to investigate local Botswana  plants and materials that may have medicinal and other utilities as part of BIUST effort to promote and utilize indigenous knowledge systems. 



The CUMT is one of the best mining research universities in the world. In 2003, BIUST Vice Chancellor Prof Inyang was installed as the first US Honorary Professor at CUMT and continues to hold that extended title. At present, CUMT has 20 schools, 61 undergraduate specialties; it boasts 15 doctoral programmes of first class; 31 master’s programmes of first class; 69 doctoral programmes of second class; 173 master’s programmes of second-class; and 9 degree-awarding programmes. To-date CUMT has trained 180 000 graduates for the country. At present, it has more than 46 000 undergraduates, among whom are more than 5000 full-time post-graduates, more than 26 500 undergraduates and more than 100 overseas students. 

              CUMT is well equipped with advanced state-of-the-art experiment facilities for teaching and research. The joint BIUST Council and Management delegation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) to jointly explore co-operation in the fields which both parties are pursuing, especially in the areas of mining, energy and the environment. The MoU will facilitate exchange of researchers, teaching staff, administrators and information in commonareas of interest as well as the establishment of the Sino-African Research Center of Mining, which will be a platform for faculty mobility and joint research in mining, science and technology between the two institutions. Through the MoU, CUMT will preferentially provide scholarships to outstanding and eligible students incoming from BIUST to study at CUMT. BIUST is also developing joint research proposals for collaborative research with CUMT in the areas of mining rock mechanics, waste recycling and mineland reclamation.


Nanjing University is one of the top five universities in China, a country that has more than 1000 universities. It is one of China`s key comprehensive universities dating back to 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. In 1999, while serving as the DuPont Endowed Professor and Institute Director at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in the United States, Prof Inyang was selected and honoured as a Concurrent Professor of Nanjing University, China. He continues to hold that title and delivers keynote lectures there every year at public events. 

Nanjing boasts advanced teaching and research facilities. 

Statistics show that since 1992, the number of research papers by NJU faculty and students on the Science Citation Index (SCI) has ranked the first among universities in Mainland China for seven consecutive years. So did the number of the articles cited by international academic circles for eight years. In the past decade, NJU has won more than 800 national, ministerial and provincial awards, including over 40 National Awards of Natural Sciences, Awards of Science and Technology Progress, and Awards of Innovation. BIUST and Nanjing identified joint research projects, student & staff exchange as areas of collaboration going forward. Nanjing University may also assist BIUST adentify appropriate research equipment as well assign its staff as part of the joint research teams. Research collaboration between BIUST and Nanjing University will focus on advanced monitoring of structures such as dams, buildings, tanks, pipelines and roads. Prof Shi Bin, one of Prof Inyang’s former postdoctoral research associates at the University of North Carolina, USA, is the current President of Nanjing University, Suzhou. 


In a short two decades, HKUST has advanced into a leading international university with outstanding world-class faculty, with globally recognized strengths in each of its four Schools (Science, Engineering, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Science). It has educated cohorts of entrepreneurial and innovative graduates, and research contributions with significant societal impact in many areas. According to the QS World Universities Rankings 2013, the School ranks  No. 24 in World Universities rankings for Chemistry; No. 12 in Asian Universities for Natural Sciences; and No. 13 in Asian Universities(QS Asian University Rankings 2013) for Life Sciences and Medicine.

BIUST and HKUST agreed to collaborate to identify areas of mutual interest to both institutions. The two delegations, however, agreed that joint research, student and staff exchange would present the best opportunities for collaboration. Prof Irene Lo, a close associate of Prof Hilary Inyang who is also a Board Member of the International Society of Environmental Geotechnology (ISEG) which Prof Inyang led as the President from 1996 to 2009, is the Director of the Environmental Research Laboratory at HKUST. That laboratory specializes in wastewater treatment technologies and waste management which are the key targeted areas of BIUST programmes. BIUST will host the global ISEG conference in Palapye in 2016. 


This is a joint venture involving Ingolstadt University of Applied Science, the government of Germany and BIUST. 


BIUST signed a MoU with Akita University in 2009. The collaboration would be invaluable in the implementation of BIUST’s regional extension centres. Currently, two BIUST students have been offered scholarships at Akita University in mining, engineering and geology.


BIUST signed a MoU with Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) on March 20, 2013 that will facilitate exchange opportunities for academic staff and students, joint research projects, exchange of academic materials, curriculum development and joint organisation of seminars and academic meetings.


During the visit, the delegation held talks with the management of the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI). SANEDI was officially launched in July 2012 with the main purpose of directing, monitoring and conducting applied research and development, demonstrating, deploying and undertaking specific measures to promote energy efficiency throughout the country.

 The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Agreement through which they will collaborate in identifying energy-efficient projects in both countries and region. 


The BIUST delegation also held a meeting with the management of the Research and Development Division of MINTEK in Randburg.  MINTEK which was established in 1934, identified areas of collaboration which included technology transfers, student and staff exchange, joint research, provision of internship opportunities to BIUST and extending assistance to BIUST with appropriate research technologies and capabilities for different research activities.
