By Letticia Makuku

Botswana International University of Science and Technology hosted an award ceremony for the Chinese language and culture students who completed level one on the 21st of February, 2017 at the BIUST Campus in Palapye

When giving an address, the Vice chancellor, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo extended his deepest congratulations to all the recipients of this award. He noted that this award is a huge accomplishment and it shows dedication amongst the recipients because it was not easy to attend all the classes when having a full time job at the same time. He noted that it is his duty to ensure that BIUST is connected to the world and with China emerging as a super power, it is very important that we learn their culture and their way of doing things.

Totolo noted that it is important to learn the Chinese language and culture for a variety of reasons, mainly because the world is becoming a global village. He said that this this program began in 2004 and has spread across all continents. “BIUST has been in need of the Chinese language and culture programme for a very long time, government officials ask me all the time about this programme and I always explain that there are so many Chinese people in the country since we do projects and businesses with them and there is always a communication barrier. ” He said.

He noted that the University has got an obligation to teach students social sciences and that includes learning different languages in order for them to understand the world around them. He further noted that most buildings around the BIUST campus were constructed by Chinese companies and the people of Palapye have interactions with Chinese people, hence there is a need for a programme such as this in this University.

“To the graduates, you are very lucky to have been the first graduates of Chinese language and culture, BIUST is a place of trendsetters. I edge you to register for level 2 and continue to speak and learn the Chinese language. Remember, success is journey, not a destination.” He said.

All the graduates were awarded certificates for level 1 of the Chinese language and culture; most of them were the students and employees of BIUST. Totolo urged the representatives from Barclays Bank and First National Bank to register their employees for this programme.
